Summary: It’s the grand opening of a new café and it’s three branches – SM Café: Super Junior, SM Café: SHINee, and SM Café: EXO.
Leeteuk wandered around the café, making sure everything was in place and ready for the grand opening.
He smiled and waved at Hankyung in the kitchen.
Hankyung waved a flour-covered hand before turning back to his pastries.
Leeteuk looked around at Yesung busy behind the counter and Kangin busily cleaning up the floor and tables.
“Hey, where’s Heechul? We’re opening in just a few minutes.”
“Where do you think?” Kangin and Yesung indicated towards the kitchen.
“Heechul! Get out here. You’re a waiter and need to do your job, which is helping Kangin clean the tables.” Leeteuk walked into the kitchen to find Heechul sitting on a chair near Hankyung munching on a freshly baked pastry.
“Alright, alright, don’t get your panties in a bunch.” Heechul finished off the last bite and brushed the crumbs off him. “I’m ready. Let’s go open up the shop.”
Good luck on your grand opening! – Your former boss and mentor, Leeteuk Onew smiled as he looked at the flower bouquet. He closed the card and set it on his desk before heading out onto the floor.
Good luck on your grand opening! From everyone at SM Café Suju
“Aww that’s so sweet.” Suho smiled as he admired the bouquet.
“Look at this one.”
Good luck on your grand opening! Your friends at SM Café SHINee
“Copycat much?” Kris grinned as he looked at the almost identical bouquet.
“Well most of the staff there had been mentored by the same mentors as you guys.” Luhan smiled as he rearranged the bouquets so they framed the entrance.
“Hey, why are you putting them there?” Baekhyun walked over to stop Luhan from moving the bouquets. “Put them by the office, on both sides of the door.”
“Oh no no no no, you are not putting those flowers by our office door. Put them back towards the entrance so new customers can see and be greeted with some pretty flowers when they first enter.” Tao stood with his hands on his hips between Baekhyun and the office door. “I don’t want to be greeted by flowers every time I go in and out of my office, not on the first day. Now leave them at the front and get to your station. We’re opening soon and we need this place to be perfect.”
Onew smiled as he looked at everyone getting the café in order. Key was busy in the kitchen as Jonghyun was working behind the counter. Minho was giving some last minute advice to Taemin and Kai, their new waiters.
“Is everything ready?”
“Just a few last minute things and then we’re all set.”
“Good. Let’s all get ready. Uniform inspection!”
Everyone lined up in front of Onew. He walked down and checked everyone’s uniform. He adjusted shirts and aprons where he saw fit and told them to fix their pants if there was a wrinkle.
“Alright, we’re good to go. Stations everyone and I’ll go open the doors.”
Key grabbed Onew’s arm. “Hold on, didn’t you forget something?”
“Oh, right. Hands in!” Everyone gathered round, putting their arms in.
“1, 2, 3. SHINee Fighting!”
Everyone rushed to his station and Onew went to open the door.
“Welcome to SM Café: SHINee!”
Leeteuk smiled as he opened the doors. “Welcome to SM Café: Super Junior!”
“Please come in.”
The line of customers waiting outside slowly made their way in.
Leeteuk, Kangin, and Heechul worked the tables, getting orders and serving customers. Yesung was busy behind the counter, whipping up drinks. Hankyung was working non-stop making fresh pastries for all the customers.
The tip jar on the counter and all the waiter’s aprons’ pockets were overflowing. They all had to periodically empty their pockets and the jar in a box in the office.
Tips would be divided amongst staff members later on. Leeteuk believed everyone should get an equal share for all the hard work they put in.
It was a very good day for a grand opening. No one knew it would be like this for a brand new shop, starting out on its own.
Leeteuk smiled as he passed Kangin and Yesung on his way to the kitchen. “Keep up the good work. We only have a few more hours to go before closing. You’re doing great.”
He walked into the kitchen to see Heechul hanging over Hankyung. “Hey, what are you doing? Don’t you have customers to see to?”
“It’s almost closing time. Most of my customers are gone.”
“Uh no, I noticed a few of your customers still lingering.”
“Well I wanted to keep Hannie here company for a bit. He’s been in the kitchen most of the day. And probably very lonely.” Heechul ran a hand along Hankyung’s back.
Leeteuk sighed. “Heechul, get back to your customers.”
Heechul stuck out his tongue and gave Hankyung a kiss on the cheek before leaving.
Leeteuk sighed again. “Some new orders for you, Hankyung. You’re doing great. Keep up the work. You’ll get to rest soon.”
“Good job too, Leeteuk. Now go take these orders. They’re all done.” Hankyung smiled as he handed a full tray to Leeteuk.
Luhan smiled as new customers entered the café. “Welcome to SM Café: EXO.”
The group of girls smiled and giggled before following Luhan to a table.
All of the tables were filled to capacity with many new customers and regulars from their trainee days.
Kris kept an eye on everything as he wandered the floor, Tao close behind. He acknowledged regulars and occasionally smiled at some of the customers.
Kris wandered into the kitchen to see how D.O. and Lay were coping. Tao stayed at the counter to watch their baristas Chen, Chanyeol, and Suho. He decided to give a hand since they all seemed a bit flustered.
“Hello hello hello!”
“Taemin! Hyungs!” Kai smiled as he made his way towards the group.
“Hyungs!” Sehun placed his orders down before moving towards the group as well.
Luhan looked up and smiled. He finished with his orders before moving to join the group as well. “Hello, welcome to SM Café: EXO. Please come in and follow me.”
The group smiled and followed Luhan to a private room on the side.
“Reserved for VIPS, special guests, etc. Now come in, come in. Take a seat, take a menu, and order something delicious from our very talented staff. Four of them trained with your same mentors; see if you can spot them.” Luhan winked.
The private room gave their VIP guests a view of the floor, behind the counter, and into the kitchen.
“Interesting concept, letting your VIP guests get a view of everything.” Jonghyun smiled as he leaned back in his chair.
“Just a little idea one of our staff came up with. Since it’s gonna be costly for guests to be able to sit here, we should offer them something worth their money which is a behind-the-scenes look. I’m not sure how long this idea will last though. I get the feeling there’s some things better left under wraps.” Luhan smiled as he noticed some movement near the counter.
“Take your time. We’ll be back to check on you later.” Kai smiled as he followed Luhan and Sehun out the door. “There’s a little bell you can ring when you’re ready. One of us will answer straight away.”
Onew smiled from his spot behind the counter. Minho, Taemin, and Kai were doing well, serving the customers. There were a surprising amount of customers, many regulars from the staffs’ trainee days at SM Café: Super Junior and a few new ones. There was a line out the door due to the lack of available space but that was bound to happen thanks to the café’s small size.
Onew didn’t want to manage a big café like his hyungs at the Super Junior café. He wanted something more intimate where he could have a smaller staff, like how Leeteuk hyung had first started out with until he expanded.
Onew passed the tray of drinks to Minho with a smile before looking behind him to check on Key in the kitchen.
“Doing okay back there?”
“Yep, a little overwhelmed but fine.”
“Did you need help?”
“No thanks. I thought we agreed you were not allowed in the kitchen. Stay behind the counter or in your office. We don’t want to run the risk of your sangtae appearing.”
Onew looked indignant. “Hey, customers like my sangtae.”
“Yeah, once in a while. Since you’re cute when it happens but only on occasion, not all the time. Now pay attention. There are drinks to be filled. Jonghyun can’t do it all himself right now. His hands are full, juggling cups and numbers.” Key winked and smiled in Jonghyun’s direction.
Onew’s smile widened as he noticed who had just entered the café. “Hyung!”
He moved around the counter to greet his hyung and mentor, Leeteuk. “What are you doing here?”
Leeteuk smiled. “I wanted to check out your café on your grand opening. I would’ve brought the others with me but I doubt you’d have room for all of us.” He glanced around at the space.
Onew shrugged his shoulders. “I wanted something small and intimate. Maybe later, when I have enough funds, I’ll add a VIP room or so for private parties and special guests.”
“Good idea. Would be good for staff meetings later on.”
“Maybe but for now, this is fine. I can’t believe how many people are here today.”
“Most are customers back from your trainee days, aren’t they?”
Onew smiled. “Yep, sorry, we stole some of your customers.”
Leeteuk smiled and placed a hand on Onew’s shoulder. “That’s alright. You needed to build up your own clientele for your café. Good job. Now let’s go have a cup of coffee together and we can talk some more.”
“Sure, I’ll meet you in my office in a bit.”
“Alright. Again, great job, Onew-ah.”
Leeteuk went to Onew’s office as Onew went behind the counter to begin their drink orders.
Kris smiled as another familiar group came through the front door. “Welcome to SM Café: EXO. Please come in and I’ll take you to your seats.”
The group smiled and followed Kris to the back room.
“I’m sure you know our other special guests. Please go in and make yourselves comfortable. Ring the bell when you’re ready to order.”
Kris smiled, hearing the loud greetings and such.
“Today’s been a good day so far, hasn’t it?”
Kris glanced over his shoulder to see Tao smiling at him. “Yeah it has been, thanks to our many regular customers and new ones. Now let’s go see who needs help. Oh and don’t forget about our VIP guests. You can meet them later after we close. They’ll still be here then.”
Tao looked at the door then back at Kris puzzled. “How do you know?”
“Because they’re our mentors, hyungs, and friends.”
Leeteuk smiled at the tired staff. “Thank you all for a successful grand opening. I couldn’t have done it without your help.”
“Man, I never knew it would be this tiring to work at such a small café. Did you see the line? It seemed like it would never end.”
“That’s what you get for having a café full of handsome and beautiful guys. Expect each day to be busy, maybe not as busy as today but busy all the same. So any pep talk or whatever, boss?” Heechul smiled at Leeteuk over his plate of cake.
“Nope, but let me give you your tips for the day. Enjoy the cake and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow’s going to be another busy day if today was any indication of how well we’ll do.” Leeteuk stood up from the table and moved towards his office.
“Aren’t you going to join us?”
Leeteuk looked back and gave a small smile. “Sorry but I got some work I need to take care of. Have fun, enjoy yourselves, and I’ll see you tomorrow. Please don’t leave a mess and the last one out lock up please. Thank you all again.”
“You’re welcome, Leeteuk. Have a good night’s rest yourself.”
“Don’t work too hard. Come join us if you can.”
“We’ll keep the mess to a minimum.”
“Thanks for hiring us.”
Heechul hit Yesung upside the head. “What kind of –“
“What? Is it wrong for me to say that?”
Leeteuk chuckled and smiled. “No, but it’s not normally something someone would say. But thank you all for being here.”
“Thanks to you, Leeteuk. Now go do your work.” Heechul rested his legs on another chair. “Maybe you should hire more help.”
“Maybe…when I have enough money.” Leeteuk waved a hand before closing his office door to begin all his neglected work.
“You didn’t have to stay here all day. What about your own café?”
“My staff are well-trained and can get through one day without their manager. Your staff is doing well as well. I don’t recognize two of your staff.”
“Just hired a week ago. They’re doing well. Would you like to stay for the celebration and give comments of improvement?”
“I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“Oh no, you wouldn’t be intruding at all.”
A knock interrupted the two.
Jonghyun smiled as he poked his head inside. “Hey boss, there’s something you need to see and take care of.”
Onew sighed. “Alright, I’ll be there in a bit.”
Leeteuk smiled at Onew’s exasperated look. “Shall we go out and see what it is?”
Onew smiled. “Of course.”
Onew opened the door and froze in the doorway. Donghae and Eunhyuk popped party poppers, showering Onew with confetti.
“Congratulations on your grand opening!”
Ryeowook came out, carrying a cake decorated with the café’s name and a congratulatory message with a lit candle. He stopped right in front of Onew and held out the cake to him.
Onew glanced at everyone gathered around. His mentors and hyungs were smiling at him. His staff smiled back at him and indicated for him to blow out the candle. He took a deep breath and blew out the candle.
“Yay! Now let’s go celebrate in style.” Jonghyun turned up the stereo where a playlist had already been picked out. Tables had been moved aside to allow space to dance.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and congratulated one another on a job well done for their grand opening.
Now they knew what they’d be in for in the coming days.
But now was the time to celebrate and enjoy their success before more hard work intruded in their lives.
Kris did a last minute sweep of the kitchen, counter, and floor before allowing the staff to join the party that was going on in the VIP room. He entered the room, followed by Tao to see that most of the staff had made themselves comfortable except for a select few.
“Uh…aren’t you guys going to do introductions?” Kris sighed as several pairs of eyes turned to look at him. “Let me introduce you to our new staff members: Tao, Chen, Lay, Chanyeol, and Baekhyun. Guys, meet our mentors, hyungs, and friends. You can figure out who’s later but let’s at least give you their names. You have time to memorize it later.”
Starting from the left down the line, everyone introduced themselves.
“Alright, since we’re all here, let us bring out the cake.” Leeteuk smiled as Ryeowook pulled out a large cake from the box next to him. Hankyung leaned over and lit the candles.
“Come blow out the candles then we can get this party started.”
Kris indicated to his staff to gather round to blow out the candles together. They all took a breath and blew out the candles together.
“Great! Let’s celebrate.”
Donghae turned the music back on and the party resumed until late into the night.
No one was concerned about working the next day; everyone was enjoying the success of a great grand opening.
They had time later to worry about work.
And if they needed help, they always had their mentors, hyungs, and friends to lean back on.
But they didn’t or shouldn’t need their help right away.
But maybe in the future…
