Title: A Helping Hand
Warning(s) (if any): minor boob grabbing
Word count: 4682
Summary: Kyungsoo gets sent away to boarding school where she has to deal with living away from her parents and amongst strangers for the first time. This wouldn't be a problem if she was an extrovert but preferring to keep to herself a lot, it was going to be a tough transition. Thankfully, there's someone willing to lend a helping hand.
Author's Notes (optional): This may have strayed from the original prompt (the fic kind of ran away from me too) but I hope you enjoy it

Kyungsoo clutched her books closer to her chest as she navigated down the unfamiliar hallway. It was her first day at a new school, not just any school, but a boarding school.
Her parents thought it would be good for her to go to a boarding school so she can learn to be more independent and break out of her shell. They thought it was a little unhealthy for her to spend so much time at home with her parents than people her own age. As a teenager, she should be more concerned with friends and boys than her family. So without consulting her, they had enrolled her at this all girls boarding school in some random location and dropped her off this weekend under the guise of taking a trip.
Kyungsoo wasn't happy at her parents' trickery but her fear of being in an unknown environment overshadowed her anger. At least her parents hadn't been completely mean, packing everything she would need and making sure she was settled before leaving. But now it was the first day of classes and Kyungsoo had no idea where to go. She figured as a new student, she needed to go to the headmaster's office but had no idea where it was. At a crossroad, she headed down the way she thought the headmaster's office would be.
"Hello? Can I help you?"
Kyungsoo froze and slowly turned around. Standing behind her was a girl that looked to be about her height. A sash hanging off her shoulder indicated that she was a hall monitor. She had a short bob cut with bangs, framing her small face. She looked questioningly at Kyungsoo.
Kyungsoo cleared her throat. Her gaze shifted to the floor before looking back at the other. "Um...I'm new here and well...I...I was trying to find my way to the headmaster's office."
"Ah, ok. Let me take you there." The girl walked over and held out a hand to Kyungsoo. "My name is Joonmyun."
"Nice to meet you. Now let's get you to the headmaster's office so you can head to class. You don't want to fall behind already." Joonmyun gave her a bright smile. She started walking down the hall, making sure Kyungsoo was with her. "So what do you think of the school so far?"
"Oh uh...I don't know...but it's nice I guess and really big and confusing."
Joonmyun chuckled. "You didn't take a tour before you came here?"
Kyungsoo shook her head. "My parents enrolled me without telling me."
"Ahhhh...well I hope you enjoy it here even if you were forced to come."
"Thanks." Kyungsoo gave a small smile.
"Well, we're here." Joonmyun smiled, indicating to the door behind her. "And so you won't get lost afterwards, here's a map of the school. Good luck in your classes and maybe I'll see you around again."
Joonmyun waved before leaving.
Kyungsoo watched her leave before she glanced at the map Joonmyun had given her. A small smile tugged on her lips as she opened the door to the headmaster's office.
"Hello, may I help you?"
Kyungsoo cleared her throat and looked at the receptionist. "Uh, my name is Do Kyungsoo. I'm new here."
"Ah yes, we've been expecting you. Here's the welcome packet containing everything you need to know about our school. I believe you should have the dorming information packet already but if not, here's an extra copy. And here's your schedule. Take a look and then I'll take you to your first class unless you know the way there."
"Um..." Kyungsoo looked at her schedule. "If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you show me there?"
"Ah yes, of course. Let me just -" A ringing sound interrupted their conversation. "Hold on a moment."
After a quick conversation on the phone the receptionist smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry but I can't take you around. Let me call someone else to help you. Please just take a seat."
Kyungsoo glanced at the clock on the wall. She already missed first period and most likely going to miss her second period but she didn't want to be a lost soul wandering around with no help. She would rather face the embarrassment of being the new girl, standing at the front of the class late, with a figure of authority to explain than to just show up alone. She played with her hands as she waited.
"You called, Ms. Kim?"
Kyungsoo turned her head and found Joonmyun standing in the doorway.
"Ah, yes, Joonmyun. Can you please show our new student to her class?"
"Yes, Ms. Kim." Joonmyun's eyes lit up in recognition when she spotted Kyungsoo sitting there. "Hello, Kyungsoo. Let's see if we can make it to your second class before it ends. If not, I'll just show you to your third class before lunch."
Kyungsoo gave her a small smile as she followed behind.
"If you have time, I can take you on a tour of the school so you can familiarize yourself with the area, either during the break time or after classes end. Would that be okay with you?"
Kyungsoo gave Joonmyun a grateful smile. "I'd appreciate that a lot."
"Then it's a date. Can you give me your number so we can decide when to meet up?"
"Oh sure." Kyungsoo wrote down her number for Joonmyun who tucked it away for safe keeping.
"Well, here we are." Joonmyun indicated to the door behind her. "You still have a good thirty minutes left in class so hope you learn well. Lunch will be after and you can just follow the crowd to the cafeteria or I can meet you after class and take you there."
"Uh, if it isn't too much trouble, I'd appreciate a familiar face to take me there." Kyungsoo gave a sheepish smile.
Joonmyun beamed. "No problem. Now let's get you inside."
Joonmyun knocked twice before opening the door. "Hello, Mrs. Lee. Sorry to interrupt but you have a new student joining your class."
Joonmyun indicated for Kyungsoo to come in. "I'll see you later and good luck."
With a parting smile, Joonmyun left.
Kyungsoo stood by the door, afraid to look at her classmates who were surely staring at her now. Walking over to the teacher, she showed her her schedule.
"Ah, ok. Class, I would like to introduce Do Kyungsoo who will be joining our class today. Please make her feel welcomed."
The class murmured a hello. Kyungsoo bowed, keeping her face down.
"Now if you can take a seat in that empty chair near the back, we can return to our lesson. Please see me after, Kyungsoo and I'll see what you need to catch up on."
"Yes, Mrs. Lee." Kyungsoo bowed and hurried to the back, keeping her eyes down as she maneuvered around bags and desks. She took her seat and quietly took notes as the teacher talked. She noticed a few classmates glancing in her direction but did her best to avoid their gaze. Making eye contact made her feel even more awkward and shy.
Class passed by quickly and as Kyungsoo was packing away her things, a girl came up to her.
"Hi, my name is Chanyeol." A tall girl with red hair was towering over her smiling. "Want to get luch together?"
"S-sorry, I have plans already."
"Oh," Chanyeol looked crestfallen. "Well maybe another time?"
"Oh um yeah sure." Kyungsoo fidgetted with the strap of her bag. This girl was very unsettling. Her bright hair and height made Kyungsoo want to avoid her. She felt intimidated enough with this giant next to her.
"Chanyeol, come on. I'm hungry." Another girl by the door was waiting impatiently as she glared at Chanyeol.
"Ok, ok, I'm coming." Chanyeol gave Kyungsoo a smile before joining her friends by the door. "Oh hey, Joonmyun, what are you doing here?"
"Just came to pick someone up." Joonmyun beamed. She peeked into the room and smiled. "Hi Kyungsoo, ready to go?"
Kyungsoo nodded her head and hurried towards Joonmyun. She tried to ignore the several pairs of eyes directed at her. "Um...so where are we going?"
"I'll take you to each of your classes then show you around the school, or as much of the school as I can during the lunch break."
Kyungsoo nodded her head.
"Oh before I forget, this is Chanyeol and Baekhyun in your grade and maybe some of your classes."
"Hi." Chanyeol waved enthusiastically.
"Hey." Baekhyun, a petite girl, smiled and waved. "Now that that's done, let's go eat, Chanyeol. I'm starving."
She grabbed the taller girl's wrist and dragged her off towards the cafeteria.
Joonmyun looked at Kyungsoo. "You're sure you don't wanna go eat lunch instead of touring the school?"
Kyungsoo shook her head. "I'd rather know where I was going than to eat in a room full of strangers right now. I don't think I'd even be able to eat anything right now."
"Alright, but you really should eat. It's not good to skip meals."
"Uh huh." Kyungsoo nodded.
"Well then, let's get started. Can I see your schedule?" Kyungsoo handed it over. "Ah ha, okay. Just follow me."
Joonmyun took Kyungsoo around the campus, showing her where her classes were and pointing out important locations. They ended at Kyungsoo's next class right before the bell signaled the end of lunch. "Well, think you're more familiar with the school now?"
"Mostly. Might take a few errors to really remember but thank you for showing me around." Kyungsoo's cheeks heated up a little. "You didn't have to."
"Oh, it's no trouble at all. I'm glad to be of help." Joonmyun smiled and waved. "Well, I'll see you around I guess."
"Yeah. Bye, Joonmyun." Kyungsoo gave a small wave and then headed into her class.
Kyungsoo gave a huge sigh as she collapsed on her bed. After classes had finished, she had to go searching for her first and second period teachers to see what she missed. The amount of work wasn't bad and she could catch up in an hour or two but being in such an unfamiliar environment surrounded by so many strangers was tough on her. She had kept her head down to avoid any eye contact though she had felt some stares thrown her way. Snuggling into her pillow, Kyungsoo was prepared to nap a little but a knock on her door canceled those plans.
With a small sigh, she dragged her body to the door. "Yes?"
"Hi, I'm your RA - Kyungsoo?!?!?"
"Huh?" Kyungsoo looked up to see Joonmyun staring at her in surprise.
"I didn't know you were the new resident. Hi, how are you doing? I would've been here to greet you when you moved in but I had a prior engagement I couldn't get out of." Joonmyun beamed a smile at Kyungsoo.
"Oh uh I'm doing fine. Uh thanks for asking."
"So everything's okay? No issue with your room or classes?"
"Uh no, nothing so far."
"Okay, well, if you ever have a problem, you can always come to me for help. I'm actually at the end of this hall on the first floor, room 101."
"Well, see you around, Kyungsoo." Joonmyun waved and left.
Kyungsoo closed the door and leaned against the door. Taking a few deep breaths, she decided to tackle her schoolwork since a nap before dinnertime was out of the question.
Kyungsoo made her way to the dining room and stood in the shadow of the entrance. People were already seated, eating and chatting happily. She tried to look for en empty seat but it was hard to tell.
"Hey, Kyungsoo. You're not going to go in?"
Kyungsoo turned around to find Joonmyun looking at her inquisitively. "Oh um..."
"Here, come on." Joonmyun grabbed Kyungsoo's hand and pulled her into the dining room. They got in line and grabbed their food before Joonmyun was pulling Kyungsoo to a table in the corner where a few girls were already sitting.
"Hey guys, say hi to Kyungsoo. She's new." Joonmyun smiled as she took a seat. She indicated the one next to her for Kyungsoo who gingerly sat down. She recognized three of the other girls at the table since they were in her classes. She gave a small nod of her head and kept her gaze down.
"Hi Kyungsoo," Chanyeol beamed at the other girl even if she wasn't looking at her.
A gentle nudge from Joonmyun had Kyungsoo looking up. "Let me introduce everyone to you. You already met Chanyeol and Baekhyun. That's Jongdae who I'm sure you've seen in your classes. And this is Jongin and Sehun who are in grades below you."
Kyungsoo nodded her head at each girl but quickly averted her gaze before any eye contact could be made.
"How come you're so shy, Kyungsoo? You don't seem that shy with Joonmyun."
"Huh?" Kyungsoo looked up in surprise.
Chanyeol had a pout on her lips as she looked at Kyungsoo. "We're not scary people."
"Yes, you are," mumbled Sehun.
Chanyeol frowned at the other girl but turned back to Kyungsoo with imploring eyes. "Come on, Kyungsoo. Talk to us, spend time with us. We were thinking of watching a movie after dinner."
"Did you even finish your homework yet?"
"Nope, but that's what class is for, right?" Chanyeol beamed at Joonmyun.
"And that's why you're just barely passing your classes right now. If it wasn't for Jongdae and Joonmyun helping you, you'd probably be in the same grade as Sehun."
"Hey! My grades aren't that bad!" Chanyeol looked indignant. "I do all my work."
"But you barely pay attention in class and require someone to teach you what you should've learned in class." Baekhyun frowned at her best friend.
"I don't have time to pay attention in class."
"Can we cut this argument short?" Joonmyun looked at Baekhyun and Chanyeol. "I think you're making Kyungsoo uncomfortable."
"What?" Both turned to see Kyungsoo almost done with her food. Without a word, the girl stood up, carrying her tray, and left.
"Awwww..." Chanyeol pouted. "I wanted her to join us."
"You scared her off with your arguing. You guys are way too loud." Jongdae said as she finished her dinner as well.
"Maybe I'll stop by her room later and ask her again."
"And I think you should stay away from her before you traumitize her further." Jongdae wiped her mouth clean of any crumbs. "Besides, you don't even know what room she's in."
Chanyeol's gasp of indignation was ignored as everyone knew Chanyeol could be a bit too enthusiastic at first. She had been too enthusiastic when meeting Jongin and Sehun that she had traumitized them a bit.
Joonmyun looked to where Kyungsoo had disappeared. She would check on the girl later, without the others.
Kyungsoo was curled up in bed, her multitude of plushies covering her like a security blanket. Her favorite plushie, a penguin doll given to her by her parents, was held tightly in her arms as she thought over what had happened today. It was only the first day of class and too much had happened. Her emotions were jumbled together, feelings of apprehension, a little fear, a little bit of happiness, and some excitement. She had never spent so much time around girls her age except for school hours. To have sat and ate with other people her age, however brief, was actually nice. Maybe her parents were right to have sent her here but she wasn't willing to concede to that thought so soon. It was still only the first day and who knows what else could happen the rest of the week? But she had to admit at least one girl wasn't so bad so far.
She was still fighting off the heat in her cheeks when the knock on the door startled her. Not sure who would be coming at this hour, though slightly scared it would be Chanyeol, she clutched her penguin to her chest as she slowly opened the door.
"Hi Kyungsoo," Joonmyun smiled. "How are you feeling? Are you okay? Did Chanyeol scare you?"
"Oh uh hi Joonmyun." Kyungsoo gave a small smile. "Um uh...I'm okay but uh yes...Chanyeol...scared me a little. Is she always like that?"
"Yes...a little unfortunate but it's part of her charm. She scared both Jongin and Sehun when she first met them too. So it's fine. If you spend a little more time around her, you'll get use to her. Would you like to go now? They're all watching a movie in the lounge right now. She'll be mostly quiet during the movie."
"Oh um...that's alright. I think I just want to stay in. I'm still getting used to things around here and being away from home. I've never lived so far away from home before and being surrounded by strangers is a little...um...I'm just not comfortable yet so yeah. Thanks for the offer but maybe next time." Kyungsoo gave an apologetic smile.
"Oh, it's fine. I just thought maybe you could use some company. But if you're okay, I guess I'll go, but if you have any problems, you know where to find me or you have my number to call. Have a good night, Kyungsoo." Joonmyun smiled and waved before joining the others in the lounge.
Kyungsoo shut the door, resting her back against it. She looked at the penguin in her arms. With a sigh and tight hug, Kyungsoo crawled into her bed and went to sleep.
"Joonmyun~ can't you get Kyungsoo to join us at least once? It's been over a month since she's been here and she still doesn't hang out with us after dinner or on the weekends."
"She eats with us at meal times and she has gotten better in class too." Jongdae smiled over her drink. "She at least speaks to me during group assignments."
"Yeah, but she still won't talk to me or Baekhyun unless it's related to school."
"That's because you guys joke around so much you scare her off."
"No, we don't." Chanyeol pouted.
"Yes, you do." Jongin said over her drink. "Do you not remember what you did to me?"
"Or me? I think I'm still a little traumatized." Sehun shivered in her seat.
"Aww, don't be like that, Sehunnie." Baekhyun wrapped an arm over Sehun's shoulder, placing a smacking kiss on her cheek.
"AHHHH!" Sehun jumped away, plastering herself against Joonmyun. "Joonmyun! Save me!"
"Baekhyun..." Joonmyun sighed. "Leave Sehun alone and finish your drink."
"Yes, ma'am." Baekhyun saluted the other girl and took a sip of her drink. "So why won't you call Kyungsoo out to come join us, Joonmyun? Only you can get her to come out it seems like."
"Yeah, you got close to the new girl really fast, didn't you, Joonmyun?" Jongdae directed a gaze at Joonmyun over the rim of her glass. "I didn't know you could work so fast."
"It's my duty as an RA to make new residents feel welcomed."
"And showing her around to her classes daily?"
"She's still unfamiliar with the campus and it's my duty as a hall monitor to help."
"But every day? It's been a month. I would think she'd know the campus by now. She's very smart." Jongdae smirked behind her cup at Joonmyun's blush.
"Well yeah, but isn't it nice to walk to class with a friend? It makes everything so much nicer."
"Joonmyun~" Chanyeol and Baekhyun crowded in on either side of Joonmyun. "Is there something you're not telling us?"
"No, of course not." Joonmyun grabbed her drink and quickly finished it. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have somewhere to go."
"Oh, really? And where would that be?"
Joonmyun smiled and waved. "I'll see you guys later."
Kyungsoo was curled up on her bed, her plush penguin in her arms as she read a book. She was feeling a lot more comfortable at school now but still found it hard to interact with her fellow classmates outside of school. Joonmyun was a big help but she still found the others a little intimidating. She hugged her penguin tighter and delved back into her book. Reading while hugging her favorite plushie always helped her relax.
A knock on her door pulled her away from her book. Still holding her plushie, she cautiously opened the door.
"Hi Kyungsoo. What are you doing today?"
"Oh hi Joonmyun. Oh uh...I was just going to read a book."
"Do you mind if I join you?"
"For book reading?" Kyungsoo looked at Joonmyun with a confused expression. "Isn't that normally a solo activity?"
"Yes, but you can always have company while you're reading."
"Um...I guess but isn't that a little weird?"
"If not, we can watch a movie together. I brought some of my DVDs along." Joonmyun held up the bag she was holding. "I also brought us a few snacks and drinks too."
"Oh um...uh sure..." Kyungsoo seemed to realized they were still standing in the doorway. "Sorry, please come in. Sorry, I just had you standing outside."
"It's alright." Joonmyun smiled as she stepped into Kyungsoo's room. She glanced around the space, taking in the neat surroundings. There weren't many personal touches around the room yet, not like Chanyeol or Baekhyun's room, but maybe in time.
"So uh...you said you wanted to watch a movie? I don't really have anywhere for us to sit."
"Your bed is fine if you don't mind."
"Oh um, sure. Just let me clean up a little first." Kyungsoo hurried to move the plushies somewhere else to make space for them.
"You can just leave the plushies. I think I can make some room for myself."
"Oh okay. Um, here, let me take your bag for you." Kyungsoo took the bag from Joonmyun and placed it on her desk. "Is it okay if I look inside?"
"Yeah sure." Joonmyun smiled as she moved plushies aside to make two seats on the bed for them.
"Wow, you got a lot of snacks. And a lot of DVDs."
"I didn't know what you would like so I just got a variety. Want to choose a DVD and snack and we'll watch on the bed?"
"Oh uh sure. Could you grab my laptop for me?"
"Sure." Joonmyun and Kyungsoo got comfortable on Kyungsoo's bed. Kyungsoo pulled her laptop towards her and put in the DVD she chose. Joonmyun grabbed a snack and dug in as the opening credits started. As the movie progressed, she noticed how Kyungsoo never let go of her penguin plushie.
The ending credits played in the background as Joonmyun turned to Kyungsoo with a smile. "So what did you think of the movie?"
"I enjoyed it. I actually hadn't seen it before even though it's been out for a while now." Kyungsoo smiled as she put the DVD away.
"Want to watch another one?"
"Oh sure, if you have time."
Joonmyun smiled. "I always have time for you."
"What?" Kyungsoo turned her head away to keep Joonmyun from seeing her red cheeks. "Um let me just pick another movie to watch."
Kyungsoo set her laptop aside and hurried to pick another DVD.
"Hey, Kyungsoo. Can I ask you a personal question?"
"Oh um...sure I guess."
"Almost every time I see you in your room, you're hugging that plush penguin. Any reason why?"
"Oh um...I guess this penguin is like my security blanket. I always feel better holding it. It's like my best friend." Kyungsoo looked down at the plush with affection in her eyes.
"Well if you ever want to hug something else, I'm available for hugs."
"What?!?!?" Kyungsoo looked at Joonmyun with wide eyes.
"Well, I'm here if you have any issues and that includes hugs of comfort when you're feeling lonely or just want a hug." Joonmyun's cheeks were flushed a light pink but she kept her gaze on Kyungsoo.
"Oh uh...thank you for the offer." Kyungsoo looked down at her feet. "If...if you don't mind, could-could I hug you right now?"
"Oh uh sure." Joonmyun climbed off the bed and held out her arms. Kyungsoo hesitantly stepped into her embrace, arms slowly coming around the other. As she gently rested her head on Joonmyun's shoulder, her arms tightened around Joonmyun's body in a firm, warm embrace. The two stood there, holding each other, reveling in the warm embrace.
Kyungsoo took a deep breath and snuggled closer to Joonmyun. "This is nice."
"Yeah..." Joonmyun smiled as she held Kyungsoo closer.
Then the two realized they were still hugging and pulled away, faces red. "Um uh...let's-let's watch a movie again, okay?"
"Yeah." The two busied themselves as they grabbed new snacks and a new movie to watch. This time, the two sat closer together than before but it wasn't something they noticed.
Kyungsoo quietly munched on her food as Chanyeol and Baekhyun argued over her. Jongin was resting her head on her lap as she gently dozed beneath the cool shade. Kyungsoo's hand was stroking Jongin's hair without her knowledge as she watched Sehun and Jongdae run around.
"Hey," a voice whispered in Kyungsoo's ear.
She turned and blushed when a pair of lips pressed against hers in a brief kiss. "Joonmyun..."
With expert movements, she replaced Kyungsoo's lap with an actual pillow so Jongin could keep napping. Then she pulled her girlfriend into her lap for a cuddle. "So how are you liking things here at school now that it's been six months?"
"It's better. I'm more used to it now."
"That's good." Joonmyun hugged Kyungsoo close. She placed her lips by Kyungsoo's ear. "Still hugging your penguin close every night?"
"Uh, not as much. Not when I have you." Kyungsoo blushed before she buried her face in the crook of Joonmyun's neck.
Joonmyun smiled and held Kyungsoo tighter. "I''m glad to hear that."
"Hey! Enough with the lovey-dovey and come play with us." Chanyeol and Baekhyun came over to tug the couple apart.
"No, we're going to stay right here. You guys can go play." Joonmyun kept a tight grip on Kyungsoo, resisting Baekhyun and Chanyeol's efforts to get them to play. "Kyungsoo still isn't comfortable playing with you guys after what you did before."
"Aww but we were just playing around."
"People normally don't play around like that."
"With close friends they do. See?" Chanyeol reached around and grabbed Baekhyun's boobs.
Kyungsoo shook her head and hid her face in Joonmyun's shoulder. "Oh go on and play and leave us alone. We gotta keep Jongin company while she sleeps."
"Fine but we'll get you next time." Baekhyun and Chanyeol joined Jongdae and Sehun, laughing and running around together.
Joonmyun watched them play together before she looked at the girl still in her lap. "I think it's safe now, Kyungsoo."
Kyungsoo shook her head. "No, I wanna stay here longer."
"Okay." Joonmyun smiled and held her close, placing a kiss on the top of her head. "I'm so glad you're here, Kyungsoo."
"I'm-I'm glad you're here too, Joonmyun. I wouldn't have survived school without you." Kyungsoo placed a shy kiss on Joonmyun's cheek. "Thank you for everything."
"You're welcome." Joonmyun nuzzled her nose with Kyungsoo's. "You up to joining the others or want to stay here?"
"Let's stay here. I wanna cuddle with you longer."
"Alright." Joonmyun moved Kyungsoo to sit next to her, moving her head to rest on her shoulder. "We'll stay out here a little longer but then movie night in my room?"
"Okay. I'll bring my snacks and plushie."
"Kyungsoo..." Joonmyun pursed her lips at her girlfriend in a slight frown. "I thought we discussed this already."
"It's just one, Joonmyun."
"But you have me. You can hold me as much as you want."
"But I miss my plushies too. You don't have the same kind of softness as they do."
"You sure?" A mischievous glint entered Joonmyun's eyes as she reached down for Kyungsoo's hand.
Kyungsoo's cheeks heated up. "Soft, isn't it?"
"Joonmyun..." Kyungsoo buried her face into Joonmyun's shoulder.
"Let's go." Joonmyun tugged Kyungsoo up, hand holding hers tightly, as they ran back into the dorm.
